The pool when we arrived: green and scummy.

It took all three of us to mow the grass with the old Herschel reel mower. Now I can do it in about an hour.

We wound up removing part of this desk to get it through the doorway.

Our front porch currently has a swing, two rockers, and a glider.

I wound up replacing several old mortise locks.

Without a working garage door opener, we usually have to prop our garage door open.

I connected the breaker which used to be for the hot tub to a new dryer outlet inside.

The pool, scum removed, but still green. Also, unsafe diving board removed.

Door to the master bathroom.

All the cabinet doors had to be sanded down to remove the stenciled apples and the layers of old paint.

The landing which was here had rotted away, along with the floor joists it was attached to.

Our kitchen, ready to be painted.

Working on painting the cabinets.

Painting the dining room walls.

Carefully painting the ceiling border.

The cabinet doors spread out after a first coat.

Charlotte testing the pool water (20 gallons of chlorine so far, and it still reads less than 1 ppm).

A baby owl we found wandering about.

The mama owl in a tree at night (taken by flashlight).

Our idyllic front porch.

Huge, thorny, unidentifiable bush by the pool. Spirea variant?

Close-up of the bloom of the mystery shrub.

One of the three huge rhododendrons which are currently blooming.

Charlotte and her mom sewing curtains for the dining room.

As a preliminary carpentry project, I built some sawhorses.

They stack.

Working, post 1. The "finally got internet" catch-up post (1 June 07).

After moving a few things needed to be done right away. The first thing we did was put new locks on all the doors. I installed a new 220 outlet so we could move in the dryer, and we started working on repairing the pool pump and filter, which leaked. High on the list, but not done, are replacing the garage-door opener and the stairway/landing going from the house to the garage.

Meanwhile, we started painting in the kitchen, which is probably the most difficult one. We removed all the cabinets and associated hardware, stripped the wallpaper, and masked to paint with three different colors. (See a later post for the final results -- for now we are waiting for special order hinges to arrive).

We've met several of our neighbors. The pastor of Rockford United Methodist Church (two doors down) stopped by with fresh banana bread and a Michigan specialty called a "Pasty" (short 'a'). Our next door neighbor came over with a gift, and even better, offered to help us get our pool going. This is, unfortunately, an ongoing project.
